With Segue enjoying a break from playing over the last few months, there has been time to play with other projects and collaborate in different directions. This is a quick update on what’s been happening with everyone that has been involved in Segue over the years.

Dave has been pursuing interests in the field of data analytics, whilst finally retiring the beleaguered Asus M6R notebook computer that was the hub of music production for the band. Putting together a monster new DAW, Dave can also be found writing music hardware reviews and a monthly column for street press Time Off, as well as contributing to esteemed music technology site Createdigitalmusic.com amd his own Segwist site. Whilst he departs for a mountain bike trip with Oxfam Australia shortly, the fruits of various collaborations with Kris Ko will be released to close out 2008 with a promise to stay tuned in early 2009. Dave has also played with Kris’s drum’n’bass act Silent Shadow in recent months, including the Brisbane leg of Parklife Festival, as per various videos on youtube here, here and here.

Leo has moved to a focus on his DJ’ing and has pursued his interests in the minimal tech sounds. Putting on events as part of the OK Kana collective, Leo has released the first of the Kana series entitled Kana:Red, which you can check out on their site or download here. Recently playing at Quantum Relic, Leo can be found regularly supporting the local dance music scene.

Kris Ko has been the eternal collaborator with Segue and originally coaxed Dave into his previous stalwart Brisbane live breaks and tech act, D-KO. The trend continues with Kris joining Segue on drums in front of 5000 or so at the Gold Coast Big Day Out this year, and Dave joining Kris on keyboards and sampler for Parklife Festival and gigs at Uber with Silent Shadow. Kris came on board to assist in some fresh mix downs of Segue live set classics for Smash Bang Records, with the pair moving on to remix King Unique and set to drop some fresh collaborations to close out 2008 on a high. Kris is music journalist by trade and helms Time Off’s dance editorial role with suitable hyperbolic verbosity. Contrary to initial assumptions, this actually means less love for Segue in the local press. So much for cronyism!

Jaymis has collaborated with Segue on local and interstate gigs and turned the negative of being unable to VJ for the band at Big Day Out into an incredible video featuring the band’s closing track, Reset. Check the video out here and be sure to check out his other projects. A “swiss army geek” or “geek of all trades”, Jaymis is the editor of Createdigitalmotion.com and is collaborating with acts ranging from Ed Guglielmino to Hyperion. Jaymis is currently curating some VJ madness at The Qld State Library’s Game On exhibition.

As 2008 comes to a close there are some classic live set tracks reworked to drop by the year’s end, with new material and jamming underway for releases and shows in early 2009. With collaborations and side projects yielding fresh ideas, outlooks and excitement, there will be a renewed enthusiasm and productivity with the direction of Segue ahead. Whilst the influences of progressive house endure, the harder edged tech sounds have evolved with the exploration of acoustic guitars, vocalists and live instrumentation in the studio. If that scares the tech house purists, rest assured, as long as there are synths in the Segue studios, there will be acidic pew pew riffs and arpeggios ready to rock.

On the 20th of January 2008 the Segue crew hit the stage to drop some progressive house and acid tech on the Boiler Room stage. Band video editor and VJ collaborator Jaymis was there with HD cameras in tow and captured the epic finale in all its acid house goodness. Having watched the likes of Chemical Brothers grace the very same stage only years before, this remains to date a definite highlight for the crew and the video says it all.

Looking for an excuse to try some new ideas, Segue have thrown their hand into the King Unique remix competition with a decidedly house oriented mix of “Dirty”. Put it down to Kris being a drummer but the cowbell breakdown has been getting love, with the mix making its way into the CD wallets of some of the Segue collaborators and beleaguered colleague DJ’s. The crew were set to give it a test at Drop’s 5th birthday but rumour has it someone fell asleep and someone else found himself lost somewhere in the middle of Queensland. The track is, therefore, decidedly more rock and roll then its remixers.

Part 17 of the Segue video diary. Filmed but minutes after Segue walked off the Big Day Out’s Boiler Room stage to the applause of many thousands of, we hope, particularly enthused people. Another glimpse into the behind-the-scenes of this collective of geeks and rockers. This is as fine a time as any to hint about the high definition footage being edited of the Boiler Room gig and a sneak preview of the tiniest hint of a new track being worked on at present. Special mention to Ryan who saved a collapsing sampler in the drum rig, Kris who rocked his first gig with us and Jaymis and Rach for being their usual professional video and photography selves.

Leo is dropping a tech set from 2am amid a stellar local line-up, making this one to mark on the calendar for those based in or who can make it to Brisbane. For everyone out of state and our colleagues and cohorts overseas, we can always see if we can slip a recording device in-line. Given how rarely Segue has uploaded its own live sets (and usually only on the mailing list) we can’t make any promises! Full event details on Inthemix.

The dual single releases on Smashbang Records have encountered some unavoidable delays and are awaiting a final launch date to be reconfirmed. Delays as such can often occur and are difficult to plan for so both Dave and Leo have taken the time to take a break from performing live to focus on studio output and recharging the batteries. Over the last few weeks Dave has been working with Segue collaborator Kris Ko on DJ re-edits of Segue tracks and some remix work coming into the studio. Some might know Kris from his dramatic drumming entrance during Segue’s Boiler Room set at Big Day Out in 2008 as captured by fans in the crowd and posted on sites such as YouTube. Others might know his body of work ranging from drumming in live DNB act Silent Shadow, producing the Beatport favourite progressive house bomb “Tribal Gathering” as part of seminal Brisbane electronic act D-KO and a very long list of electronic and Indy scene happenings. DJ edits will be doing the rounds shortly. Those particularly curious can get in touch or keep an eye on the mailing list. For the time being, stay tuned for the confirmed release dates.

Segue hit the Boiler Room stage at Gold Coast Big Day Out festival at exactly 1:15pm on Sunday the 20th of January to the sound of synth note, which was D3 to be exact. Held by Dave’s right index finger as the band geared up to drop it’s live progressive house and tech set. At 1:35pm Monday, the band and it’s crew are in various locations and states though from all accounts, there is an incredible amount of HD and standard def video footage, photographs and audio recordings to assemble over the coming week. Watch for our FlickR galleries. For those that missed the set the band was joined on stage by drummer Kris Ko from live d’n'b act Silent Shadow. Manning an acoustic and digital drum kit for the closing half of the set, Kris added a tough tribal feel to the acid tech portion of the set. A few thousand in attendance seemed to agree, it sounded rather nice.
